The Rigamarole : Safe Spaces Policy

The Rigamarole is dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive and harassment-free dance experience for everyone regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexuality, dis-/ability, body, race, age or belief. We do not tolerate harassment or unsafe behaviour in any form. Participants violating these rules may be denied registration to and/or expelled from any of the Rigamarole’s events at the discretion of the event organisers.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexuality, dis-/ability, body, race, age, belief
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
  • Gaslighting (manipulation aiming at making someone doubt their experience/perception)
  • Harassing photography or recording
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above mentioned

Creating a safe space is the responsibility of all participants in the event. As such do not offer unsolicited advice to fellow dancers and please be mindful of other dancers on the floor. Aerials are not permitted on the social dance floor at any time!

You are never obliged to dance with anyone, and always have the right to deny an invitation to dance with or without a reason, and end the dance at any time after having previously accepted. A “NO” should not be taken as a personal slight - there are many and varied reasons for declining a dance but the decision should always be respected.

Dance roles are not tied to gender/sex and shouldn’t be treated as such in any Rigamarole event. We ask that you let your dance partner know which role you would prefer at that specific time. We also ask you to treat switch-dancing (the exchange of roles throughout the dance) as a question of consent and ask your dance partner.

Enforcement

Participants asked to stop any harassing or unsafe behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Organisers, staff, volunteers, vendors and members at any event arranged by the Rigamarole are also subject to the safe-spaces policy. If a participant engages in harassing or unsafe behaviour, event organisers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the event (with no refund).

Event organisers may take action against anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.

We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related social activities. We think people should follow these rules outside event activities too!

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of our event for everyone. We want you to be happy at our event. People like you make our event a better place.
